SoundWhy is a free phonics and visual IPA pronunciation tool. Enter an English word to see its IPA pronunciation and the relationship between its letters and sounds.
The tool uses phonics principles to help learners understand common letter-sound patterns and improve pronunciation, decoding, and spelling. It is useful for learners, teachers, and parents.
When a letter is silent, such as the e in name, no IPA sound appears beneath it and the letter is shown in gray.
Results include IPA, syllable divisions, and letter-to-phoneme mappings. Select “Play sounds” to hear each phoneme and syllable in order, followed by the complete word.
If a word is not available, SoundWhy will show “Word not found in the dictionary.” Try another word or check again after the dictionary is updated.
